The Grand Seiko 56 or GS56 refers to the watches that house the Cal.5641(three hander), 5645(date only) and 5646(day/date) movements. These watches were produced for 14 year period, spanning from 1968 to 1982. They are the performance automatics of the base Cal.5601 and Cal.5606 Lord Matics. The Grand line runs at a higher 28800 beats per hour requiring a beefier mainspring and pallet fork jewels. For better accuracy, they are fitted with jeweled barrel holes. The GS56 movement also has a decorated bridge plate, serial number and an indication of it being regulated to 5 positions. The automatic rotor also has gold filled lettering as well. Furthermore this first iteration of the Grand line was retired at the end of the 70s only to be revived again in 1988, giving the first incarnation a nostalgia that is frozen in time. This particular date variant is in excellent condition with intact 18k gold medallion fixed the the iconic vintage semi-hooded lug. This particular example has some scuffs on the dial and a hairline scratch on the crystal by the 10 o'clock but its overall in very good condition. The hands are clean and everything operates as expected.
This is an excellent every day watch with vintage charm. Its design is versatile enough to be paired with dressy or casual wear. This particular 7010 case would also be a good choice for someone looking for a "one" Grand Seiko collection. As for sizing, the streamline case and compactness of the Cal.56xx makes for a light and efficient case shape. The dimensions might seem fairly standard for the late 60s early 70s.
