This early King Quartz is all about texture and line. The dial of this example is pristine and has a distinct basket weave texture. The watch additionally has a variety of case finishes, including polished sides and a sandblasted front. Peculiar however is the raised keystone that runs up the center of the case. The hooded lugs square off at the top and bottom to give the watch an overall sporty appearance. This is an unexpected design to see within a dress watch line. The movement has some noteworthy tricks as well. Besides the day/date calendar function at the second position, is a pause/advance function in the first, where you would typically find hand-winding for a mechanical movement. When the crown is turned forward the second hand will jump 2 seconds ahead, and when turned backwards the second hand pauses for 1 second. It’s a strange trick and if not entirely practical, but does speak to Seiko’s innovative spirit, especially when it comes to accuracy.
This watch makes for an excellent daily wearer. It has a calendar for both day and date and its quarts movement will only vary a few seconds per month. It isn’t particularly dressy but wouldn't’ be out of place at the office or out to a fancy dinner.
