  • The Lord Matic Special was Daini-Seikosha’s response to the very diverse and high production Suwa Seikosha Lordmatic Cal.56xx driven watches. This particular LM Special is a second generation model 5216 that came out after the more stylistically conservative 5206. Furthermore, the first generation Cal.5206 had an instant day/date changeover mechanism that utilized one of the largest springs in any seiko and in the wrong hands would jump out of place or break the day/date jumper completely. That being, the Cal.5216 has a standard date driving wheel and day finger which changes the calendar in a typical slow rotation. This particular model, the 7100, is the most conservative of the LM Special Cal.5216 models, which were typically colorful with faceted crystals. This 7100 is a no-nonsense white dial variant with a flat crystal. The Case is worn but retain the faceted cuts that give the overall appearance an angular, more modern look. It’s also quite compact. The dial and hands are in excellent condition. The dial has some pinking patina but it’s even and gives the vertically brushed dial some warmth. The crown is big and grippy, all functions operate very well. This particular 5216 is the 25 jeweled variant which is up jeweled from the base 23 jewels. The two extra jewels are fitted to the barrel arbors, ensuring even ware, consistent time keeping and protects against “knocking.” The leather strap is hand made from supple leathers that won’t need breaking in. Its semi-padded which gives the overall piece some body.

The understated styling of the case and hands along with the day/date function makes this watch an excellent every day wear. It runs at 8 beats per min which is a high performance watch for the 1970s. In terms of sizing, it is on the smaller side of the 5216 LM Specials, and is perhaps closer to the first generation 5206 models. It could very well be suitable as a unisex watch as well.
