  • The Seiko Cal.7019 is a utilitarian automatic movement without handwinding or hacking. To wind it up, give it a shake then wear it and you’re sporting activities should keep it wound! This movement made its way into many Actus and “5” series watches during the 1970s. This particular example is part of the “Sports” line marketed to those with an active lifestyle. This was a fairly new concept in the late 60s and early 70s. The semi-matte dial looks technical with a 60 seconds track. The red seconds hand is meant to be legible at a glance, while active in sport. The Sports line usually had lume which this one does, however it is no longer holds a charge. The dial and hands are very clean, almost like new. While the seconds hand has darkened somewhat at the base, it is original with original factory paint. The lume at in the hands and at the markers has turned into a light cream color and has neither rot nor staining. It is very pleasing and compliments the dial well. The “cushion case” has a very short lug-to-lug and contours to the wrist. This example has a well worn case and may have been polished at some point, however the state of the case isn’t out of like with it’s utilitarian aesthetics.

This is an excellent choice for a daily wearer if our course a casual look is suitable. It has a day/date complication along with being a no-fuss automatic, will keep running as long as it’s worn - there are minimal mechanics to run afoul which should allow for greater longevity. In terms of size, it is a larger than dress watches of it’s the early 1970s, however the short lug-to-lug and its conforming shape makes it an excellent choice someone with slim wrists who’s also looking for a watch with a strong presence. Its also closer to contemporary sizing which may make it a good entry point for a first vintage watch.
