  • The Skyliner we have at hand is an early example and falls almost entirely within the first generation’s styling. It has a serial number that begins with J rather then the caliber-model(xxxx-xxxx) that Seiko switched to around 1968. At the 6 o’clock, it has the lower text: 21 Jewels, Diashock and at the very bottom, the “applied dial” star. This is the common 6 o’clock markings for the earliest Skyliner models. What makes this a sort of bridge model is the cursive script Seiko Skyliner type at the 12 o’clock. This is different to the earliest modles which had a modernist fong. The cursive Seiko Skyliner type was moved to the 6 o’clock after 1970 or there about. This model is the only one with “Calendar” designation on the dial as well. This particular example is in excellent condition. There are no deep marks on the case or dial and the crown is brand new, borrowed from the first KS, sporting a raised “S.” There is some chipping on the dial, at the very perimeter, along the chapter ring. It is not very visible to the naked eye and is partially obscured by the fresh domed acrylic crystal. A new crow tube was fitted as well for better structure, when winding and for better water resistance. The watch performs quite well for it’s age.

This could very well be an excellent every day watch, if manual winding is desired. It takes some discipline, but there is something very charming about starting the day with a full wind. This watch also wears large for a vintage piece. The case itself is quite flat however the dial is a whopping 34.1mm in diameter! It’s very legible, has excellent wrist presence, without being heavy or burdensome. It’s very flat and slips under the sleeve without issue.
