This model 3170 has a rectangular dial, high polish faceted case and features the cal.2220. It is a formal mens two hander meant for black tie events and the like. In terms of functionality the movemen is very minimal and features no hacking or complications, and forgoes a seconds hand. The movement is also hand winding. However it does have a high beat rate at 28800 and a fully jeweled train bridge including the mainspring barrel. Planely speaking, the movement is designed for accuracy and longevity. The outward aesthetics is where this 3170 shines however, particular the dial. This particular example has an almost flawless enamel dial. Enamel dials were common during the pocket watch era and became increasingly rare as silkscreen printing and other dial manufacturing methods gained popularity due to the cost and time required for the enamel process. Enamel dials typically have softer printing both in terms of edge quality and saturation. This gives enamel dials more of a glow and in the case of this blue dial and white roman numerals, a subsurface depth. Despite the watch being quite small in terms of case dimension at 30mm, the lug width and thus strap width is a sizable 19mm. This is the typical dimension of a men’s watch, even by modern standards. This watch is most suitable for special occasions especially when paired with the Milanese bracelet. Additionally 1970s Seiko two handers have become a sort of gender ambiguous watch. Initially designed as a mens watch, when compared to the upscaling of contemporary pieces, for women included, this two hander could be be conservatively seen as a contemporary women’s watch. In reality though, it only takes the right outfit and occasion to pull this one off!
