This particular 21 jewel cal.6102 is manual wind and comes late in the Skyliner production run. A Skyliner is always manual wind, often a three hander only, sometimes adding a date complication and always having an acrylic crystal. This example has a high quality, new old stock GS box domed acrylic. The dial has an all-over rose patina. The dial and hands are very charming in person and give the watch a distinctly vintage character. The case may have had water ingress at some point or was over oiled, as the balance cock and train bridge have some varnishing. The movement has been thoroughly cleaned, service and functions without fault. The case is unpolished and has wear, however there are no signs of heavy neglect. The late Skyliners are very interesting in that they still harken back to an earlier design language; acrylic crystals, manual wind and snap on casebacks. What’s compelling about the later Skyliners is that they retain the thinness of classic manual wind watches, however the crystal, dial and case are a bit bigger than its 50s predecessors. The watch is visually larger than expected because of the size of the dial and the depth of the crystal. This watch is certainly robust enough to be worn daily if manual winding is of interest. Conversely, it would make the perfect lazy sunday, summer vacation, semi-formal dinner watch.
