  • Seiko’s Cal.5606 was the entry level day/date variant of the Cal.56xx series of movements. The movement was entirely novel and an original design for Seiko. This was a time in which functionality was being added while miniaturization was also desired. The Cal.56xx may also be understood a modernizing moment for Seiko. Lord Marvel was out, Lord Matic was in. Automatics were to be integrated in novel ways, not grafted on. Seiko went on to produce a sizeable production run of the Lord Matic Cal.5606 spanning 10 years, in countless case shapes along with various hands and dials. Lord Matic Cal.5606 are not what you would consider rare. What is exceedingly rare is a +50 year old gold plated watch that is in this good of condition. Gold plating in the watch world is typically done over a brass base betal and is fairly thin. The gold plate wears away in time to reveal the brown base metal underneath, typically at the edges. The worn out gold plated watch is a difficult look to pull off, especially if the watch is more modern. This particular example of the 5606-7190 is in excellent condition, and while it doesn't have a few dings and scratches, the gold plating is intact. It so very bright and the brushed top has it’s original texture hand hasn’t been polished. The dial and hands are nearly like new as is the crown.

This watch is an excellent daily wearer. It has all the functionality of an everyday watch; automatic and hand winding and a day and date complication. It’s dressy enough for special occasions or a formal dinner. In terms of sizing, the unibody case forgoes the bulky case back, so the watch is quite compact and sits flat against the wrist. Further, the Cal.56xx was designed to be very compact so the watch has minimal bulk. The dial is still quite generous in size so it visually has more presence than one would expect from a vintage piece.
